In the Norse mythology Laufey is a woman and the mother of Loki, but in the Marvel universe Laufey is a man and the father of Loki. I was wondering why they have made this gender change for the comic series?

If i remember my mythology right, laufey is a woman they might have made the gender change for the series, if not Loki is gonna get one hell of a shock XD

lol You also have to remember that for a while that Loki was a woman, so if they changed the gender of Loki for a while why not change the gender of Laufey? It just made me laugh when I was looking up things on Norse mythology I found out that Loki is the son of giantess Laufey, when in the Thor moive it is pretty obvious that Laufey is a man or are the Frost Giants a race where you can't tell the difference between a man and a woman?

probably, but you do have to also take into account that the creators of the movie probably wanted to deviate away from the mythology as well so that's probably a reason for the gender change

Well it just isn't in the movie, it is also stated in the comics that Laufey is the King of the Frost Giants and is a man. I don't really care about this because in the fics that I am writing Laufey is going to be a man since I am going by the plot of the movie that was based on the comics which were loosely based on Norse mythology. I just thought it was really funny that the myth said that Laufey is a woman and Marvel is saying that Laufey is a man. What really annoys me is when people make a big deal out of this and don't like the comics or movie because of this one small thing when even Stan Lee the creator of the series stated that his comics were loosely based on Norse mythology, because if it was pure mythology Sif's wig would have stayed gold and wouldn't have turned black.

yeah that annoys me too, you see it with nearly almost every franchise that makes a movie out a book or comic, the change one thing and people go crazy over it

I know, to me I think that Marvel version of Thor works out better with Laufey being a man more than if they went with the acutal plot and made Laufey a woman.

It would be a Totally different story, like the truth on how it really was. Changing a persons gender changes the whole thing, that's not small at all. That's like changing the race, which will then change the whole history. Leading farther away from the truth, facts. And this is wht makes it a myth to began with. Why not give the truth, and the myth too. So one can pick and choose which to follow. This is wht makes researching so hard, cause u have to go through all the lies (myths) to get to the real facts. So No it really isnt small, it's chaos.

Hey everyone, late to the party here but isn't there a much simpler solution than "changing Loki's mother's gender" - if Marvel wanted to include Loki's dad, not his mom, why not just use his actual name (Fárbauti)?
